9 Days Northern Circuit Route Kilimanjaro Trek – Chaga Adventures
Overview
The Northern Circuit Route is the longest and one of the most successful routes to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, offering unmatched panoramic views, excellent acclimatization, and a quieter, more remote trekking experience. This route circles around the northern slopes of the mountain, far from the more crowded trails, making it ideal for those seeking both solitude and a higher summit success rate.
With Chaga Adventures, this 9-day itinerary is carefully designed to give you the best possible chance of reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m) safely and comfortably. The extended duration allows for gradual altitude gain, following the “climb high, sleep low” principle, which significantly improves acclimatization and overall trekking experience.
Throughout the journey, you will pass through a wide range of landscapes—from lush rainforest and open moorland to alpine desert and the arctic summit zone. The route offers unique perspectives of Kilimanjaro, including rarely visited northern slopes with sweeping views toward Kenya.
Supported by experienced guides, porters, and cooks, every detail is managed to ensure your safety, comfort, and enjoyment. The Northern Circuit is perfect for climbers looking for a longer, less crowded, and highly rewarding Kilimanjaro adventure.

Tour Plan
Day 1: Arrival in Tanzania – Kilimanjaro Airport → Moshi / Arusha
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by the Chaga Adventures team and transferred to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. The drive offers your first glimpse of northern Tanzania’s landscapes and, on a clear day, views of Mount Kilimanjaro rising above the plains.
In the evening, meet your lead mountain guide for a comprehensive pre-climb briefing. You’ll go through your itinerary in detail, review safety procedures, and complete a full gear check. This is also your opportunity to ask questions and ensure you are fully prepared. Enjoy a relaxed dinner and a good night’s rest before your trek begins.
Day 2: Londorossi Gate → Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,780m)
After breakfast, drive to Londorossi Gate for registration, then continue by vehicle to the trailhead. Your trek begins in a dense tropical rainforest, where the air is humid and rich with the sounds of birds and wildlife.
The trail is gentle and shaded, making for a comfortable first day. You may spot colobus monkeys swinging through the trees and a variety of bird species along the way. The forest floor is lush with moss and ferns, creating a serene atmosphere.
Arrive at Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree Camp) in the afternoon, where your camp will be set up and a warm meal awaits.
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Day 3: Mti Mkubwa → Shira 1 Camp (3,500m)
Leaving the rainforest behind, the trail opens into moorland with expansive views. The vegetation changes dramatically, with giant heathers and unique alpine plants replacing the dense forest.
The path gradually ascends across rolling hills toward the Shira Plateau. As you gain altitude, the air becomes cooler and thinner, and you’ll begin to feel the effects of elevation. Your guides will encourage a steady “pole pole” (slowly) pace.
Arrive at Shira 1 Camp, where you’ll enjoy your first clear views of Kibo Peak.
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Day 4: Shira 1 → Shira 2 Camp (3,900m)
Today’s trek is relatively gentle as you cross the vast Shira Plateau—one of the highest plateaus in the world. The landscape is wide and open, offering panoramic views in all directions.
This is an important acclimatization day, allowing your body to adjust to the altitude. In the afternoon, you may take a short acclimatization walk to a higher elevation before returning to camp.
Expect colder temperatures and stronger winds as you settle into Shira 2 Camp.
Hiking Time: 3–5 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Day 5: Shira 2 → Lava Tower (4,630m) → Moir Hut (4,200m)
This is a key acclimatization day. You will ascend steadily toward Lava Tower, a striking volcanic rock formation and an important altitude milestone.
Reaching over 4,600 meters, you may begin to feel the effects of altitude more noticeably. After spending time at this elevation, you will descend to Moir Hut to sleep—following the “climb high, sleep low” principle that greatly improves acclimatization.
The landscape here becomes rugged and dramatic, with sparse vegetation and rocky terrain.
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Day 6: Moir Hut → Buffalo Camp (4,020m)
Today you begin the Northern Circuit traverse, heading into a more remote and less-traveled part of the mountain. The trail winds along the northern slopes, offering stunning views across the Kenyan plains.
The terrain is quieter and more isolated, giving a true sense of wilderness. You may encounter fewer trekkers, making this one of the most peaceful sections of the route.
Arrive at Buffalo Camp in the afternoon and enjoy the dramatic scenery.
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Day 7: Buffalo Camp → Third Cave Camp (3,800m)
Continue across the northern slopes with rolling terrain and gradual elevation changes. This day is less demanding physically but important for maintaining acclimatization and conserving energy for the summit.
The landscape remains open and expansive, with sweeping views and a sense of remoteness. Wildlife sightings are rare at this altitude, but the scenery is truly unique.
Arrive at Third Cave Camp for rest and preparation for the next stage.
Hiking Time: 4–6 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Day 8: Third Cave → School Hut (4,800m)
Today you ascend toward School Hut, your base camp for the summit attempt. The environment becomes increasingly barren, with cold temperatures and strong winds.
Arrive early in the afternoon to allow time for rest and preparation. After an early dinner, your guide will brief you on the summit push. You’ll then rest for a few hours before waking around midnight.
This is a critical preparation day—hydration, rest, and mental readiness are key.
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Day 9: Summit Day – School Hut → Uhuru Peak (5,895m) → Mweka Camp (3,100m)
Your summit attempt begins around midnight under a sky full of stars. The climb is slow and steady as you make your way to Gilman’s Point on the crater rim, then continue toward Uhuru Peak.
Reaching the summit at sunrise is an unforgettable moment—standing at the highest point in Africa with breathtaking views of glaciers and the plains below.
After celebrating, begin your descent to School Hut for a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp through changing landscapes and increasing oxygen levels.
This is the most physically demanding day, but also the most rewarding.
Hiking Time: 12–15 hours
Habitat: Arctic → Moorland
Day 10: Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate → Moshi / Arusha
After breakfast, descend through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. The trail is easier and allows you to reflect on your achievement while enjoying the scenery.
Upon arrival, you will receive your summit certificate before being transferred back to your hotel. A hot shower, comfortable bed, and celebration await.
Hiking Time: 3–5 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
